How to Make Moving Day Easier For Your Little Ones

You’re ready to take the leap of investing in real estate within the Okanagan Valley and you couldn’t be more excited! But then you remember that means you’ll have to move your whole family and all your belongings into a new space, and that feels overwhelming! When it comes to relocating your family with small children, don’t fret; here are some tips on how to make moving day easier for your little ones – and yourself.

Create a Moving Week Timeline

Sit down well ahead of time and prepare a schedule to tackle your moving tasks. You’ll likely want to plan at least a week prior to your move-in date to adequately account for everything; from when you’ll be packing up each room to how you’ll be transporting everyone to your new home. No detail is too small to plan ahead so things can run as smooth as possible.

Get Your Little Ones Involved

When children are included in the moving process, it eases stress they may be feeling about leaving the place they call home. Have open conversations to ask them how they’re feeling and try to bring some fun into the mix by turning packing into a game! Review which items they’re able to help with from your moving week timeline, and as their tasks get crossed off the list, they can earn a small reward for their help.

Keep, Donate, or Recycle

Set up three areas labeled “keep”, “donate”, and “recycle” and have your children sort through their space to help purge what doesn’t need to be brought along in the move. This is a great time for you to do the same! The general rule of thumb is that if you haven’t used it in the last twelve months, you likely won’t need it in your new space either.

Plan a Sleepover with Family

It may help to have your kids stay with a family member or friend during moving day, so they’re out of the way of heavy furniture and big boxes. Everyone involved will feel less overwhelmed if you’re able to completely focus on the moving day tasks at hand, rather than being concerned about the safety of your child.

Kids are incredibly intuitive and many can be sensitive to change as well. Small tokens of regularity like their backpack packed with their favourite snacks can go a long way towards moving day comfort.
